Photography at Hillsdale High School

At Hillsdale, we offer:

Beginning, Advanced and AP photography.

The beginning course gives students experiences with the creative and technical aspects. Photoshop and other apps will be explored. Various camera settings are taught to offer greater creative and technical control. This course builds the foundation for visual literacy regarding both form and content of photographic images. Students also learn to examine images critically. Lighting techniques for portraits and still lives are taught in the studio. Emphasis is placed on the creative and commercial aspects of studio photography. Successful completion provides a foundation for further study in the advanced and AP Photography course.

Advanced photography is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art photography. At the end of each term, students submit a portfolio. The portfolio is developed within a concentration that investigates an idea of personal interest for each individual student. Students are introduced to new photographers, digital artists, and sophisticated techniques as points of departure to create work that reflects the student's spirit and vision.

The AP course is for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of the art of photography and wish to develop mastery in the concept, composition, and execution of their ideas. Students submit portfolios to the AP Board in May.
